Robben Island Training Plan
Sixteen weeks of structured preparation, built to get you fit enough to swim a Robben Island crossing.
A self-paced, structured freestyle programme for the Robben Island crossing. It gives you the shape of your training: how much to swim each week, when to push and when to recover, how to read your sets, and how to test your fitness so you can see progress in numbers.
Delivered as a PDF you print and keep at the poolside. Freestyle only.
Who it is for
Adult swimmers preparing for the Robben Island crossing who want a clear, structured solo path to the start line. You can comfortably swim 1 km or more. You are disciplined and self-motivated, comfortable reading a training plan and running your own sessions.
This is a template programme, not a personalised one. For a plan written around your individual fitness and schedule with a coach watching as you go, Remote Coaching is the right choice.
What is included
- A phased training plan showing your weekly volume targets and the focus for each week, in a low, medium, and high volume pattern that builds and recovers across the programme
- A clear explanation of how to follow the plan: the four phases, why recovery weeks matter, and how volume trends upward across the build
- Guidance on how to read your sets: session structure, effort levels, drill and swim sets, and the shorthand you will use throughout
- Critical Swim Speed testing: how to run the time trials, calculate your threshold pace, and track it across the programme
- Stroke-count awareness: how to count and use your strokes per length as a measure of efficiency
What the plan does not contain
The individual workout sessions themselves. The programme sets the shape and volume of your training. The ready-made sessions to swim come from the Swim Training Toolkit. A standalone buyer has the plan, the guidance, and the testing tools, and will need to source or build their own daily sessions. The Swim Training Toolkit is the natural companion purchase.
The four phases
- Technique and fitness foundation. Building correct freestyle movement patterns and a solid base. Volume is low to moderate.
- Endurance and technique. Volume increases while you hold the technique gains from the foundation phase.
- Speed and back-to-back volume. Higher intensity and back-to-back training days, preparing your body for sustained effort over 7.5 km.
- Peak. Your highest volume week. You arrive ready.
Why it Works
Why it works
Periodised, not random. The low, medium, and high volume pattern builds you up and lets you recover so you arrive fit rather than overtrained. Built specifically for the 7.8 km Robben Island crossing.
Progress you can measure. Critical Swim Speed testing and stroke counting give you numbers, not guesses.
Safety
This programme involves open-water swims in dropping winter temperatures. Never swim alone. Know your limits. Seek medical clearance before starting.
Investment
R400. Once-off. No subscription. Also available as an add-on to the Swim Training Toolkit at the same price.
What comes next
The Swim Training Toolkit supplies the ready-made sessions to train from. The Robben Island Crossing Complete Prep Pack bundles this plan with the cold-water, dry land, nutrition, and race-day guides in one download. Remote Coaching is the option if you want a coach building your plan around you.
